Prep Your Home for Winter

Prep Your Home for Winter

During the winter season, our homes tend to somehow get messier than usual. More time spent inside, and the chilly weather outside prevent us from doing the tasks for a tidy home (that bag of recycling can wait until March, right?). Or maybe we’re just inside many more hours of the day, so we just notice untidiness more.

Either way, there’s a reason Spring Cleaning exists, as most homes tend to become slightly unruly over the hibernation months. Even though it’s not even technically Winter until December 21st this year, the frigid Calgary temperatures of -26° this week certainly make it feel like Winter is here. So to prevent being a multi-day cleaning fiasco in Spring time, here’s some tips to help you prep for the deep freeze.

Give WestMaids a Call

Well, obviously this is the first recommendation. With Calgary’s best home cleaning, we’ll make sure your house is spotless so that you can spend less time tidying and more time cozying. Schedule a deep clean and your house will be ready to take on the new year.

Steam Clean your Microwave

No matter how hard you try, the microwave will no doubt because a sticky, gross mess. It’s not your fault though; how is anyone supposed to know that putting last night’s child in for five minutes will superheat it to explosion?

The stuff of nightmares.

Luckily, microwaves are as easy to clean as they are to get dirty. Just soak a tea towel in water, squeeze some lemon juice on it, and microwave for 3-4 minutes. Let the tea towel sit for a few minutes so that you’re not spending your holidays nursing a 2nd degree burn. Once the tea towel has cooled, use it to wipe down the microwave. Your week-old chili should come off without hassle.

Thanks to our house cleaning Goodyear az friends, Maid Empire, for the this tip!

Degrease your Appliances

This is literally a two step process. Scrub your appliance with a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser, and then wipe down with a microfibre cloth. That’s it! I guess it’s three steps if you need to buy a magic eraser, but this is a super easy way to quickly clean some filthy stoves.

Literally magic. Thanks, Mr. Clean!

Keep your Lines Flowing

When’s the last time you cleaned your bathtub drain? You’re welcome for the reminder. This one is pretty easy maintain. Our favourite is the plunger method.

Fill the bathtub with enough water to submerge the plunger, in order for suction to form. Step two is then to plunge. Use some force and give it 10 solid plunges. You may see gunk come out, so watch out to not splash yourself. This should dislodge most of whatever is sitting in the drain, keeping it flowing until at least the spring time.

Uncover your Tracks

Sliding door and window tracks are also a magnet for dirt and grime. Cleaning this area is easy, but requires a bit more effort. Spritz some of nature’s cleaner (vinegar) on the tracks and scrub with a brush. Use a q-tip to get into the tough corners. Wipe down with a paper towel to get rid of residue.

Prep your car for winter

Winter time means messy cars as well. Snow tends to produce slushy conditions, getting cars dirty inside and out. Check out driving school Calgary A Proactive Driving School for tips on how to keep your car clean this winter.
