How To Get Rid Of Trash Can Odors: A Step-By-Step Guide

The odor from the trash can is the worst, but it’s not surprising when you think of the leftovers and scraps there. It gets even worse when the trash bag leaks because the smell lingers after taking out the trash.

Although a smelly trash can is pretty common, no one should have to deal with this issue. Luckily, removing and preventing foul odors in the trash can is possible. Here are five practical steps to do it.

Step #1. Empty the trash can

If you notice a foul odor coming from your garbage can, it is advisable to empty it right away. Do not wait until the garbage bag is full before throwing the trash out to prevent the stink from worsening and taking over your living space. Clean the can separate from the trash bag to avoid introducing more odor.

Step #2. Wash the trash can

If you’ve not washed your trash can in a while, that foul odor could be a sign that you need to. Try washing first with soap and water and then use a disinfecting spray to remove the odor. Remember to wash the trash can lid as well; there may be trash stuck around them that will begin to stink if not removed quickly.

Step #3. Consider using baking soda

If, after washing the trash can, the odor does not disappear, you could try adding an odor-absorbing material like baking soda. Other odor-absorbing materials you could try include coffee beans, cat litter, and charcoal, depending on what you can get your hands on quickly.  Sprinkle it in the bottom of the bin before placing the trash bag, which will help prevent and absorb smells.

Step #4. Add a splash of scents

Here’s another trick you can try. Splash a few drops of your favorite scents or oils at the bottom of the trash can. Leave the lid closed overnight before replacing your trash bag, and wake up to a sweet scent.

You may also want to experiment using cotton balls instead. Put a few drops of your selected scent in the cotton balls and drop them at the bottom of the bin. That way, you can get your trash can to smell just how you want it to.

Step #5. Try using dryer sheets

Just as you use dryer sheets for your clothes, you can also use dryer sheets to get rid of foul smells and freshen up your garbage can. Simply place one or two in your trash can or under a new bag. To prevent unpleasant odors from reoccurring, replace the dryer sheets once a week.
