5 Cleaning Quick Tips
With all of the requirements of our modern lives, we don’t always have time to take care of our homes. In fact, this is exactly why we got into this business! However, sometimes last minute occasions or guests don’t leave time for a cleaner to make our homes sparkle. So to help you out, we have put together a list of 5 cleaning tips you can use to tidy your house when short on time.
5 Tips for Cleaning when Short on Time
1. Only clean what you have to
Focus your efforts on the areas of your home that your guests will be in or will have access to. Typically this is areas such as the entrance way, living and dining rooms, and, in particular, bathrooms.
If you have clutter in any of these areas, collect it and move it to your bedroom, office, or other area unlikely to be accessed by your guests. In the bathroom, make sure you give the toilet bowl a quick scrub with a toilet brush. Unless your toilet is particularly dirty, you don’t necessarily need soap or detergent. A quick scrub of your bathroom chrome will also leave your bathroom sparkling.
2. For the areas you do have to clean, start at the top
The area above your cabinets probably falls under tip #1, but for anything below, leave the floor for last. The goal here is to make sure you’re not cleaning anything twice. So dust counters and tables first, and sweep crumbs onto the floor. You can collect whatever has fallen to the floor with a quick vacuum sweep afterwards.
3. Transfer your dishes from the sink or drying rack into the dish washer
Do this even if they’re clean. Sorting dishware, utensils, pots, and pans is time consuming. Toss them in the dishwasher and sort them out later. You may have to wash them again if the washer has dirty contents, but that is easier to do when you have more time.
4. Ventilate rooms to remove any lingering odours
Ventilating your home will remove stuffiness and bring in fresh air. The best way to do this is by opening windows and doors. You can create a draft by opening a window or door on opposite sides of your home. Even during winter, doing this for a few minutes will bring in crisp air that will freshen up your home. Turning on bathroom fans and even central air conditioning will help in bringing in new air. An electric fan can also be used as a last resort for rooms without windows or external doors, or otherwise with poor ventilation.
Pro tip: Spray fabrics with diluted white vinegar. The vinegar will act as a deodorizer, and the smell will evaporate with the vinegar.
5. Swap out your garbage bag
Kind of seems obvious, but is easily forgotten. This really depends on what’s in there, but there’s nothing worse than opening a garbage can and being met by semi-decomposing contents. Do your guests a favour and put a new bag in. Save this step for last as there may be things you throw away during your quick clean.
